Swimming in Santorini
Santorini's dramatic volcanic caldera defines its coastline — the west side drops sheer into deep water, while the east and south coasts slope gently to accessible beaches. The island's famous black sand beaches at Kamari and Perissa sit on the eastern shore, protected by the towering Mesa Vouno headland that acts as a natural wind wall.
Meltemi winds sweep across the Cyclades from the north, but Santorini's east-coast beaches benefit from the island's mass as a shield. Kamari, Perissa, and Vlychada consistently rate among the best-protected swimming spots in the entire Cyclades. The south-coast beaches add further options when winds pick up.
The swimming season here stretches from May through October. The volcanic sand absorbs heat, making the beach warm underfoot even in shoulder season. Peak summer brings 26°C water temperatures alongside the strongest winds — but with three excellent-rated Meltemi shelters, you'll always find somewhere to swim.
