Swimming in Naxos
Naxos is the largest island in the Cyclades, and its long western coastline hosts some of the finest sandy beaches in all of Greece. The beaches stretch for kilometres south of Naxos Town — Agios Prokopios, Agia Anna, Plaka — each one a different balance of convenience and seclusion.
The Meltemi channels powerfully through the strait between Paros and Naxos, making the island's exposed beaches popular with kitesurfers. Mikri Vigla, on the west coast, is one of the windiest spots in the Cyclades. But the sheltered southwestern beaches around Agia Anna and Agios Prokopios offer excellent protection, with calm waters ideal for families.
Swimming season runs from late May to October, with water temperatures peaking at 25-26°C in August. The island's size means you can usually find a beach that suits the day's conditions — sheltered or exposed, sandy or dramatic.
