Swimming in Koufonisia
Koufonisia (specifically Ano Koufonisi, the inhabited island) is tiny — you can walk across it in under an hour — but packs some of the most beautiful beaches in the Cyclades into its miniature coastline. The south coast is a continuous ribbon of turquoise coves and golden sand.
Despite the island's small size, its south-facing beaches are well protected from the Meltemi. The north coast is exposed and rocky, but you'd rarely go there anyway — the south side is where the magic happens, with Caribbean-like colours in an Aegean setting.
Swimming season runs from June to September. Koufonisia has become increasingly popular in recent years, but the beaches remain stunning. Come in June or September for the best balance of warm water and breathing room.
