Swimming in Tinos
Tinos sits just north of Mykonos and catches the full force of the Meltemi as it funnels through the strait between the two islands. This makes it one of the windiest islands in the Cyclades — but also one with some surprisingly well-sheltered beaches on its south coast.
The island's north and east coasts are exposed and best left to windsurfers. The south-facing beaches offer a dramatic contrast: calm waters, sheltered bays, and that particular Aegean blue that makes you forget the wind is howling just over the ridge.
Swimming season runs from June to September. Tinos is less touristy than neighbouring Mykonos, which means its beaches are quieter even in peak season. Check the wind direction before heading out — the difference between coasts can be remarkable.
