Swimming in Skyros
Skyros is the largest and most remote of the Sporades, sitting further east than its siblings and closer to the Cycladic wind patterns. The island splits into two halves — the green, fertile north and the barren, mountainous south — with beaches concentrated along the more sheltered coastlines.
With 6 beaches tracked, Skyros offers surprising variety. The north and west coasts tend to be calmest, sheltered by the island's interior highlands. The east coast faces the open Aegean and can be rough during windy periods, but offers dramatic scenery.
Swimming is best from June to September. Skyros retains an independent character that sets it apart from the other Sporades — less touristy, more authentic, with beaches that reward exploration.
