Swimming in Skiathos
Skiathos is the most popular of the Sporades islands, famous for Koukounaries — regularly voted one of the best beaches in Greece. The island packs over 60 beaches into a compact coastline, with pine trees growing right down to the sand in many places.
The Sporades sit in the western Aegean, sheltered from the worst Meltemi winds by the Pelion peninsula of mainland Greece. Skiathos benefits further from its dense forest cover, which breaks the wind and creates a microclimate noticeably calmer than the Cyclades.
Swimming season runs from May to October. Skiathos is the beach island of the Sporades — organized beaches with facilities alternate with hidden coves accessible only by boat. The water is clean, the pine scent mixes with sea salt, and the swimming is excellent.
