Swimming in Chios
Chios is a large, diverse island close to the Turkish coast, known for its mastic production and medieval villages. Its coastline ranges from long sandy beaches in the south to dramatic volcanic shores in the north, with 7 beaches tracked across the island.
The island's proximity to Turkey provides some shelter from western winds, while its own mountainous interior blocks northern Meltemi energy from reaching the south coast. The eastern shore, facing the Turkish mainland, tends to be calmest.
Swimming is best from June to September. Chios doesn't draw the same crowds as more famous islands, which means its beaches — many of them excellent — remain pleasantly uncrowded throughout summer.
Swimming season: June to September
