Swimming in Hydra
Hydra is the car-free jewel of the Saronic Gulf, a rocky island where donkeys carry the luggage and swimming spots are reached on foot or by water taxi. Its coastline is mostly rocky, with swimming happening off smooth stone platforms and in small pebble coves.
The island's position deep in the Saronic Gulf provides excellent shelter from Meltemi winds. With 4 beaches tracked, Hydra offers clean, clear swimming in a setting that's more dramatic than your typical sandy beach — think rocks, deep blue water, and stone-built harbours.
Swimming is best from May to October. Hydra is about atmosphere as much as beaches — swimming here means diving off warm rocks into deep water, then drying in the sun with no sound but the sea and the distant clip-clop of donkey hooves.
Swimming season: May to October
